Moldova Condemns Sixth Airspace Violation as Russian Weapons Strike Territory

The first emergency alert was recorded at approximately 7:50 a.m. local time in the town of Căușeni, where residents reported thick smoke rising beyond the municipal perimeter. Police and territorial emergency services subsequently located drone remnants and detonation sites in the Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, Hîncești, and Anenii Noi districts. The explosions sparked vegetation fires and damaged agricultural buildings near the town of Crocmaz. Authorities confirmed that no casualties resulted from the incident, though the debris caused localized damage and fires that required police response to secure the areas.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu issued a strong condemnation of the incident, stating that Russia’s war is “dangerously reaching Moldova.” In a post on X, she wrote: “I condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine this morning… Russian air attack weapons, including Banderol missiles and drones, violated our airspace and exploded on our soil.” The incident marks the sixth unauthorized flight in Moldovan airspace, intensifying tensions between Chișinău’s pro-EU government and Moscow as the conflict in Ukraine continues.

In response to the breach, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Russian Ambassador Oleg Ozerov to deliver a formal protest note. The ministry stressed the seriousness of the event, noting that the unauthorized entry of the weapons put civilian lives and safety at risk. Chișinău urged Russia to respect Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, demanding that similar incidents not recur. This diplomatic action follows a pattern of escalating friction, with the country facing multiple airspace violations in recent weeks.

The incident occurred against a backdrop of heightened regional security concerns. On the same day, Ukrainian regional authorities reported that Russian attacks in Ukraine killed at least eight civilians and injured 83 others. Additionally, Lithuania temporarily closed Vilnius airport for approximately one hour on Saturday morning after a dangerous object was spotted in the skies, prompting a scramble of NATO jets. These events are part of a broader trend of hybrid attacks, sabotage attempts, and airspace violations across European borders as tensions with Russia continue to climb.

Moldova’s geographic position places it directly adjacent to the conflict zone, exposing it to collateral damage from Russian strikes on Ukraine. The repeated incursions into its airspace have raised significant concerns regarding national security and the stability of the region. While no military response has been announced by Chișinău, the diplomatic escalation through the summoning of the ambassador signals a firm stance against further violations of its territorial integrity.
