Georgescu was stopped by officers in traffic in the Otopeni district before being taken to his residence in Mogoșoaia, where a search was conducted in his presence. DIICOT prosecutors and police officers from the Criminal Investigations Directorate executed five home search warrants in total, targeting addresses in Bucharest, Mogoșoaia, Ciolpani, and Buftea. Following the searches, the individuals targeted by the investigation are scheduled to be questioned at the DIICOT headquarters.
According to the investigation, the alleged criminal group was established in September 2021 and consisted of three individuals: two Romanian citizens, aged 64 and 47, and an Italian citizen, aged 56. The suspects are accused of presenting themselves as successful businessmen and executives of foreign companies. They allegedly promised an entrepreneur, identified in reports as Rezvan Leu, a €6 million loan from a foreign banking institution, contingent upon the provision of financial guarantees. The victim subsequently transferred over €1 million to the group. Investigators allege that the suspects later claimed the financing amount could be increased to €15 million if an additional guarantee of €100,000 were provided, which the victim allegedly transferred. The promised loans were never disbursed, and the funds were not returned.
The investigation into this matter began after a complaint was filed by the victim. In September 2025, DIICOT confirmed the existence of a criminal case *in rem* regarding the formation of an organized criminal group and fraud. At that time, the investigation was conducted without any individual holding the formal status of a suspect. The current arrest marks a procedural escalation in the case. Prosecutors emphasized that the investigations are ongoing and that all persons concerned benefit from full procedural rights and guarantees provided by law, including the presumption of innocence.
Georgescu’s legal troubles extend beyond this fraud allegation. He is currently facing trial on separate charges of publicly promoting Romania’s interwar fascist Legionary Movement, known as the Iron Guard, and praising figures associated with it, including founder Corneliu Zelea Codreanu and wartime dictator Ion Antonescu. Additionally, Georgescu’s political career was interrupted in December 2024 when the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the presidential election’s first round, which he had won. The annulment followed the declassification of documents alleging foreign interference, cyberattacks, and irregularities in his social media campaign.
The current fraud probe remains in the investigative stage, with no charges formally indicted against Georgescu in this specific case at the time of his arrest. The legal outcome of the searches and subsequent interrogations will determine the next procedural steps, including whether formal charges will be filed. Georgescu is presumed innocent until proven otherwise in all pending matters.
