South Korea Stalls in 0-0 Draw With Venezuela as Attack Stalls Under Moreno

The match was defined by South Korea’s inability to convert possession into clear-cut chances. The team managed its first shot attempt only in the late moments of the first half, struggling to connect simple passes in the final third. Despite some promising phases in the second half, the attack remained sterile, failing to find the back of the net before the final whistle.

Venezuela, ranked 47th in the FIFA World Rankings, established early control and posed significant defensive threats. Venezuelan forward Jesus Ramirez forced a tough save from South Korean goalkeeper Song Bum-keun before having a goal disallowed for offside following a turnover. In the 72nd minute, a shot by Gleiker Mendoza ricocheted off defender Lee Han-beom and struck the woodwork, leaving the hosts on the brink of defeat.

South Korea’s best opportunity came in the dying seconds of stoppage time. Winger Lee Dong-gyeong tested Venezuelan keeper Jose Contreras with a left-footed shot that appeared destined for the bottom right corner. Contreras lunged to his left to get a piece of the ball, preserving the 0-0 deadlock.

The result follows a mixed start for Moreno, who began his tenure with a 3-0 victory over Ecuador on September 24 before suffering a 4-1 loss to Uruguay four days later. The Uruguay match was significant for striker Son Heung-min, who tied legendary forward Cha Bum-kun’s record of 58 men’s international goals. Had Son scored in Friday’s match, he would have broken the national record to become the highest goalscorer in South Korean soccer history.

The Korea Football Association has stated that Moreno and his staff are signed through the end of November. The decision on whether he will lead the team at the Asian Football Confederation Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia next January will depend on his performance over his first six matches in charge. With two more matches scheduled for next month, the pressure remains on the Spanish tactician to show consistent improvement.

South Korea will conclude their September-October match window by hosting Uzbekistan on Tuesday at the Yongin Mireu Stadium in Yongin, located approximately 40 kilometers south of the capital. The team will look to secure a positive result to cap off the international break.
