Ulrich was injured during SNU’s 49-14 loss to Ouachita Baptist last Saturday. The game was delayed for nearly an hour while the player received on-field medical attention before being transported to a hospital. SNU President Keith Newman stated in a release that Ulrich was “continually surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates, and dear friends” during his hospitalization. Newman added, “May God’s peace and comfort be with us all,” urging the community to keep Ulrich’s circle in prayer during what he described as an “unimaginably difficult time.”
The death has prompted an immediate response from the athletic department and the broader campus community. SNU Athletics posted on X, formerly Twitter, stating: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the loss of our SNU football player, Tyler Ulrich… This loss is deeply felt across our campus.” Head Coach Dustin Hada paid tribute to Ulrich on social media, describing him as a “Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous.” The university also hosted a campuswide prayer chapel on Tuesday in Ulrich’s honor.
Originally from Azle, Texas, Ulrich was in his third season at SNU. Over his career, he accumulated 16 starts across 20 games, including six starts in the current autumn season. He ranked third on the team with 36 tackles. A finance major, Ulrich was known for his academic and athletic dedication, having previously earned all-district and academic all-state honors in high school, where he also competed in powerlifting. His high school coach, Jason Vines, described Ulrich as an “unbelievable young man” whose work ethic and demeanor were impressive even to his peers.
Ulrich’s passing was initially announced by his father in a Facebook post, who noted that the family is “truly blessed to receive all the love and prayers” but spoke with a “heavy heart” about the loss. “Tyler led a life full of faith, passion and being a BEAST on the football field!!!” his father wrote. “He will be remembered always.”
In the wake of the tragedy, SNU, which currently holds a 1-5 record, has canceled its scheduled game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) this Saturday. SWOSU Athletics issued a statement extending its thoughts and support to the SNU football program and university community during this difficult time.
