Interior Minister Vit Rakusan stated that 20 of the injured sustained minor wounds, while three suffered moderate injuries. Rescue services, including firefighters, paramedics, doctors, and at least one helicopter, were deployed to the scene. Media footage showed at least one carriage off the tracks following the impact, with passengers being evacuated onto buses near the station. The drivers of both trains survived the accident, according to Czech news agency CTK.
The RegioJet train was operating an overnight service from Prague to Kosice in eastern Slovakia when the collision took place. Fire Rescue Services indicated that more than 300 passengers were on board the fast train. It was noted that a significant number of the passengers were foreigners, with many Ukrainians using this specific route to reach the town of Chop in Ukraine’s southwestern Zakarpattia region, which borders Slovakia.
Transport Disruptions and Official Response
Transport Minister Martin Kupka announced that a major track segment between Prague and the eastern part of the country had to be shut down to facilitate the investigation into the cause of the crash. Both the interior and transport ministers traveled to the accident site to oversee the situation. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed his “sincere condolences to all the bereaved” in a post on social media platform X.
The closure of this corridor represents a significant disruption to regional rail connectivity, particularly for international travelers using the line between Czechia and Slovakia. While the immediate rescue operations have concluded, the full extent of the infrastructure damage and the precise cause of the signal or operational failure remain under investigation by transport authorities.
Other minor road incidents involving fatalities were reported in the Czech Republic around the same period, including a motorway crash where three Poles were killed after a vehicle collided with wild boars and a subsequent multi-vehicle accident that resulted in the deaths of four Romanians. However, the train collision in Pardubice remains the most severe transport incident with the highest confirmed casualty count in the region during this timeframe.
Authorities have not yet provided a preliminary timeline for when the railway line might reopen, as safety assessments of the track and signaling systems must be completed. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether human error, technical malfunction, or other factors contributed to the head-on impact.
