The investigation intensified after police raids on July 8 and 9 at 12 locations in Jakarta, South Tangerang, and Bogor, including a luxury residence in Bogor identified as belonging to Adriansyah. During the raids, investigators recovered 74 kilograms of gold bars and cash in Indonesian rupiah, US dollars, Singapore dollars, and Saudi riyals. While police spokesman Budi Hermanto initially valued the cash at $20 million, subsequent reports place the total value of the seized assets at approximately 476 billion rupiah (roughly $29.6 million). The gold haul, found in a hidden safe within the residence, is reportedly larger than the 72 kilograms of gold used to clad the National Monument in Jakarta.
Adriansyah resigned from his post on Saturday, stating in an Attorney General’s Office announcement that he was stepping down to maintain the “integrity, objectivity, and neutrality of law enforcement.” Prior to his resignation, Adriansyah denied wrongdoing to reporters, stating he did not understand why he was being investigated in connection with the power outages. The investigation is linked to broader fraud scandals involving state insurers Asabri and Jiwasraya, as well as allegations that state officials colluded with mining companies to procure poor-quality coal for state energy plants.
The transfer of the case to the Attorney General’s Office has raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest, as the agency is prosecuting one of its own former senior leaders. However, senior government officials have defended the procedural step as a pragmatic measure to streamline the complex, high-priority case. State prosecutors are expected to issue a new investigation warrant targeting Adriansyah.
In a related development, Sutrimo, a man reported to have managed Adriansyah’s household, was found unconscious outside a clinic in South Jakarta on Thursday and later declared dead. Police are investigating the cause of death and examining whether Sutrimo had a formal connection to the case. No formal charges have yet been filed against Adriansyah, who remains a suspect in the ongoing proceedings.
