Fatalities and injuries confirmed after major fire at CFB Wainwright

The fire began at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time on October 17, according to a Department of National Defence press release. The Wainwright municipal district reported that high winds contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. While the specific cause remains under investigation, Global News cited unnamed military sources suggesting a gas line or well was hit during a live-fire training exercise, causing an explosion. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) declined to confirm these details, stating that casualty numbers would not be released until next of kin were notified. However, the Wainwright mayor described the event as the “largest mass casualty event” seen in the town’s history.

Emergency services responded quickly, with fire crews battling the blaze throughout the night. By late Saturday, the municipal district announced the fire was “being held,” though crews continued to monitor the area. The incident triggered a Code Orange emergency response in Edmonton, the provincial capital, as local healthcare centers in Wainwright were “completely overwhelmed.” Dr. Warren Thirsk, an emergency department physician at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, described the surge in patients as a “one in every 15- to 25-year disaster.” Patients were diverted to hospitals across Edmonton to manage the volume of casualties.

CFB Wainwright, located about 210 kilometers southeast of Edmonton, is one of Canada’s most significant army bases, housing the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre. It serves as a primary training ground for army field force units and hosts allied forces. Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan expressed “profound sadness” over the event, emphasizing the CAF’s priority of supporting affected personnel and their families. NATO Military Committee Chair Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone also issued a statement, noting that many allied forces train at Wainwright and expressing solidarity with Canada.

Authorities have not issued a formal evacuation order for the surrounding area but have asked residents to avoid the incident zone and keep roads clear. The RCMP is investigating the matter in coordination with federal and provincial partners. An official investigation is expected to launch soon to determine the precise cause of the initial incident. Further details regarding the extent of the damage and specific casualty figures are pending the completion of next-of-kin notifications.
