Corinthians women edge Caracas to secure Libertadores quarter-final spot

The decisive factor in the fixture was Corinthians’ clinical efficiency in the final third, which allowed them to control the game against a Venezuelan side that struggled to adapt to the high altitude and pace of the contest. Emily Lima’s side, playing in their second group-stage match, displayed the defensive solidity and attacking width that have characterized their recent continental success. The win means Corinthians will face a winner from the other Group A tie in the next round, where single-leg knockout format applies, with penalties deciding any level scores after normal time.

Corinthians’ dominance in this competition is historically significant, having lifted the trophy six times previously in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. A seventh title would mark their fourth consecutive continental crown, a feat unprecedented in the women’s game. Striker Jaqueline, who started at the tip of the attack, continues her prolific 2026 campaign, which has already seen her register 14 goals and three assists. Her performance against Caracas adds to a season that has seen her surpass her previous individual records for the club, where she holds the eighth-highest all-time goal tally with 53 strikes in 170 appearances.

Caracas’ participation in this edition of the tournament was jeopardized earlier in the week by visa delays, with the delegation only receiving clearance from Ecuadorian authorities on Thursday. They arrived in Quito on Friday and immediately entered the competition with a 3-2 loss to Colombia’s Santa Fe in the early hours of Saturday. Despite the disrupted preparation, head coach Gimino Tropiano’s team managed to compete effectively for portions of the match against Corinthians, though they failed to convert their limited chances. The match was watched by a neutral crowd at Casa Blanca, with VAR utilized throughout the group stage to ensure consistent officiating standards across the 16-team tournament.

Financial stakes remain high for the remaining participants, with CONMEBOL offering a US$2 million prize to the champions, US$600,000 to the runners-up, and US$250,000 to the third-placed side. All other participating clubs receive a participation fee of US$50,000. As the group stage concludes, the focus now shifts to the quarter-final draw, with the final scheduled to take place on 31 October. Corinthians will return to action in the next round, aiming to extend their historic record as the most successful club in the competition’s history.
