Ukraine launches over 1,000 drones at Russia; Kremlin claims neutralization of 1,015 targets

The Russian Ministry of Defence stated that 1,015 Ukrainian drones were neutralised overnight across 15 Russian regions, the annexed Crimean peninsula, and the Black Sea. Leningrad Governor Alexander Drozdenko specified that 145 drones were shot down in his region and that approximately 20,000 people were left without electricity following the raid. While the Ministry claims total neutralisation, local officials confirmed active fires and civilian casualties, indicating the attacks achieved significant tactical impact on energy and logistics infrastructure.

The strikes coincide with deepening tensions between Kyiv and Washington. US President Donald Trump defended his decision to pause new sanctions on Russia, arguing that further measures would “foolishly” drive Moscow away from the bargaining table. Trump criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for targeting Russian energy infrastructure, claiming Zelenskyy “doesn’t want to end this war.” In response, Zelenskyy stated that Russia had attacked Ukraine’s energy, oil, and gas sectors 76 times in the week since Trump announced an “energy ceasefire” on October 11. Zelenskyy told The Financial Times that he was “done” with the ceasefire, citing continued Russian aggression, and accused Moscow of attempting to cause a blackout in Ukraine.

Background on the current operational environment indicates a sharp increase in long-range drone warfare by both sides. Zelenskyy reported that Russia used nearly 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs, and 66 missiles against Ukraine in the past week. These attacks targeted residential and critical infrastructure, with energy facilities in four Ukrainian regions struck overnight, leaving tens of thousands of families without power. The Ukrainian president emphasized that US-Ukraine intelligence sharing had resumed after a period of suspension and warned that waiving sanctions would strengthen Putin’s war effort.

Civilian casualties from reciprocal attacks were reported in Ukraine. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian air strike in Kyiv killed a woman and injured three others, damaging a subway station, a 25-storey residential building, and a medical facility. In Zaporizhzhia, two attacks killed a woman and wounded at least two others, including a six-year-old girl. In Volyn, strikes on residential buildings killed two people and injured 12, including two children. Ukrainian officials are currently assessing the full extent of the infrastructure damage, while diplomatic teams in Miami are expected to discuss next steps in negotiations following recent contacts between US envoys Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, and Kyiv’s representatives.
