The visit is scheduled to place a heavy emphasis on economic engagement, reflecting the substantial commercial footprint Sweden maintains in Southeast Asia. According to data provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, total trade in goods between Singapore and Sweden reached $1.9 billion in 2025. Complementing this, trade in services stood at $1.4 billion in 2024. These figures underscore a robust bilateral economy that extends beyond simple commodity exchange into high-value services and technology.
Sweden’s economic presence in Singapore is particularly notable for its density and depth. As of 2024, Sweden’s foreign direct investment (FDI) stock in Singapore amounted to $9.7 billion, significantly higher than Singapore’s direct investments in Sweden, which stood at $1.6 billion. This asymmetry highlights Singapore’s role as a primary hub for Swedish corporate expansion in the region. Currently, close to 600 Swedish companies maintain a presence in the city-state. One such example is the music streaming giant Spotify, which recently expanded its commercial team based in its South-east Asian regional headquarters in Singapore, illustrating how Swedish firms are leveraging the city-state’s strategic location to grow their regional operations.
The President’s delegation is structured to facilitate these business discussions. Accompanying President Tharman will be a high-level entourage including Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli and Minister of State for Manpower and Energy, Trade and Industry Foo Cexiang. The delegation also includes Members of Parliament Valerie Lee and Vikram Nair, along with officials from key economic agencies such as the Economic Development Board, Enterprise Singapore, and the National Research Foundation. This composition suggests a dual focus on attracting further investment and fostering research and innovation partnerships, areas where the two countries have already begun collaborating, including in the field of quantum technologies.
The itinerary itself is designed to bridge political leadership with industrial innovation. In Stockholm, President Tharman will receive a ceremonial welcome at the Royal Palace and a state banquet hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. Beyond the diplomatic formalities, the President is slated to deliver a lecture at the Stockholm School of Economics and engage with Swedish entrepreneurs and business leaders. A distinct portion of the schedule involves a visit to Fryshuset, a Swedish non-profit organization focused on youth empowerment, signaling a broader interest in social and human capital development alongside hard economic metrics.
The economic narrative extends to Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, where the focus shifts specifically to the future of transport. President Tharman and the King are scheduled to visit the World of Volvo automotive museum and the Chalmers University of Technology. These engagements are intended to facilitate dialogue with businesses and academic institutions regarding next-generation mobility and sustainable transport solutions. In Gothenburg, the President will also be hosted for lunch by Vastra Gotland Governor Sten Tolgfors, further cementing regional ties within Sweden.
Political dynamics in Sweden add a layer of complexity to the high-level meetings. President Tharman is expected to meet with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlen. It is worth noting that Kristersson has been leading a caretaker government since the September general election, following the narrow defeat of his ruling right-wing bloc by the centre-left opposition. This transitional political environment may influence the scope of immediate policy commitments, though the long-standing institutional ties between the two nations provide a stable foundation for continued cooperation.
Defense and security remain integral components of the bilateral relationship. In May 2026, Senior Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security K Shanmugam visited Sweden to engage with officials in the security and defense domains. Singapore continues to purchase Swedish defense equipment, and Sweden remains an active participant in Singapore’s military project tenders. The two defense ministries are currently exploring ways to enhance collaboration, a track record that complements the economic objectives of President Tharman’s visit.
The visit also serves to maintain momentum from recent high-level exchanges, including the October 2025 visit by Swedish Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch for the Singapore International Energy Week. As the delegation concludes its engagements in Gothenburg and Stockholm, the primary aim is to translate the commemorative nature of the 60th anniversary into tangible new investments and collaborative projects. The next phase of this relationship will likely be measured by the specific outcomes of the business delegations and the progress made in defense and research collaborations in the months following the state visit.
