France to Hold Nationwide Strike on Nov. 5, Disrupting Rail and Potentially Aviation

The trade union CGT has confirmed its call for nationwide action, joining four representative unions at the national railway company SNCF: CGT-Cheminots, UNSA-Ferroviaire, SUD-Rail, and CFDT-Cheminots. All groups have urged railway employees to participate in the walkouts and demonstrations. The scale of the disruption will depend on participation rates and the service plans implemented by the operator.

Rail services across the network are expected to be affected. High-speed TGV trains, Intercités long-distance services, regional TER trains, and commuter connections in the Paris region are all on the list of services to watch. International rail itineraries involving France may also face delays or cancellations. An SNCF service alert published on France’s transport data platform already indicates disruption on some regional lines in the Pays de la Loire region on November 5. While one report notes limited TGV disruption is expected, the broader consensus from union calls suggests significant impacts across TER, Intercités, and Paris RER services.

The impact on aviation is less defined. The union FO DGAC has published a strike notice covering employees at the Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGAC) and associated agencies. While a strike notice does not automatically confirm flight cancellations, reduced staffing in air traffic control could lead to flight restrictions. Major hubs, including Paris Charles de Gaulle and Paris Orly, are among the airports potentially affected. Additionally, demonstrations in Paris could cause road restrictions, diversions, and temporary station closures, creating uncertainty for airport transfers and local travel.

Travelers with itineraries involving France on November 5 are advised to check directly with their airline and rail operator. It is recommended to allow additional connection time and review rebooking options for affected services. No further official announcements regarding specific flight cancellation numbers have been released, and the situation may evolve as the strike date approaches.
