EA Closes BioWare, Halting Next Mass Effect Game Amidst 3% Global Workforce Reduction

The most immediate consequence of the shutdown is the cancellation of the next installment in the Mass Effect series. This title, intended as a follow-up to the original trilogy, had been in development since the early 2020s. However, progress had slowed significantly following severe downsizing at the studio after the 2024 release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet EA’s commercial expectations. According to reporting from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, only around 50 staff members remained at the studio prior to its closure, a number insufficient to complete the development of a massive-scale sci-fi RPG without a significant and immediate hiring spree.

This decision comes shortly after EA completed its transition to a private company this past summer. The acquisition was led by Saudi Arabia-based investors and private equity firms, who purchased the company alongside all its associated studios and intellectual properties. The closure of BioWare represents a significant consolidation of assets under this new private ownership structure, signaling a shift in EA’s strategy regarding high-risk, high-cost RPG franchises.

Despite the studio’s dissolution, the Mass Effect franchise is not entirely defunct. In an exclusive report, IGN revealed that the upcoming live-action television series based on the video game is still moving forward at Prime Video. The series entered active development at Amazon in late 2024, though it has yet to reach full production status. While little is known about the specific narrative, industry rumors suggest the show aims to bridge the narrative gap between the original game trilogy and the now-cancelled video game sequel. EA retains full ownership of the Mass Effect intellectual property, ensuring its commercial viability continues through other media formats.

While BioWare is closed, EA has confirmed that other major titles remain on track. According to Variety, which included comments from EA’s executive leadership, Mary’s Iron Man (developed at Motive) and Star Wars Jedi 3 (developed by Respawn Entertainment) are still coming. Additionally, EA announced a collaboration between two of its other major studios, DICE and Respawn Entertainment, for a totally new project. Following days of strong rumors from reputable sources, this new collaboration is widely believed to be Star Wars Battlefront 3.

The closure has prompted immediate movement among former BioWare employees. Ex-developers have already banded together to form new studios, seeking to continue their work in the RPG genre. One such entity, Archetype, is preparing to ship Exodus, an action role-playing game inspired by Mass Effect, with a target release date of 2027. Another new studio, Arcanaut, has recently begun work on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. This project is led by Casey Hudson, the original director of both Knights of the Old Republic and the first Mass Effect, signaling a potential continuation of the creative vision associated with BioWare’s classic era.

The shutdown of BioWare underscores the volatile nature of the modern video game industry, where large-scale developments can be halted abruptly due to financial performance and corporate restructuring. For players, the immediate impact is the loss of a planned Mass Effect sequel, though the franchise’s life extends into television. For the industry, the formation of new studios by former BioWare staff offers a potential alternative path for the future of these narrative-driven franchises, even as the original creators come to a close.
