Six killed in shooting at youth welfare facility in northern Germany

The suspected shooter, a 45-year-old German national of Turkish origin residing in Hanover, was arrested following the incident. Authorities stated that the attack was likely an “extended family tragedy” triggered by a dispute over the custody of the suspect’s three-month-old daughter. The suspect had an appointment at the facility on Monday to discuss this custody matter with several of the victims. No other suspects were at large, and officials confirmed there was no further threat to the public.

Lower Saxony Interior Minister Daniela Behrens characterized the attack as an “extremely cold-blooded act of violence” with no political or economic motives. A police spokesperson indicated that the incident did not appear to be a case of femicide but was instead rooted in the specific environment of the youth welfare center. The facility provides temporary accommodation for pregnant women and young mothers with children.

Shots were first reported at approximately 12:10 local time. Lüneburg Police Chief Kathrin Schuol noted that the suspect was known to police for having voiced threats in the past, though he had not been classified as a particularly violent individual. He did not possess a firearms license. At the time of the shooting, the suspect’s infant daughter and her mother were present in an office at the facility but were not harmed.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle driven by a woman. Police responded to a roadblock on a nearby country road, where they stopped a Mercedes with a blown-out tire. Armed officers detained both the suspect and the driver, who were instructed to lie face down in the road. Three people, including the suspected gunman, were detained in connection with the incident. While police did not disclose a specific number of additional injuries, they confirmed that several other people were wounded, some seriously.

The facility is located on Dankersstrasse, south of the town center. Police initially reported five deaths before the toll rose to six after the hospital fatality. The case is being handled as multiple homicides. Legal proceedings regarding the custody dispute, which authorities believe was the primary motive for the attack, are expected to be reviewed in light of the criminal charges now facing the suspect.
