Etihad Rail launches Dubai passenger service, offering 64-minute trips to Abu Dhabi for AED 39

The Al Yalayis station is located in Jumeirah Golf Estates, strategically positioned to serve Dubai’s expanding southern communities. Company officials stated that the location was selected to support long-term urban development and future growth, rather than merely addressing current travel patterns. The project was completed three months ahead of schedule, with the overall passenger network planned and announced in December 2021. The station features free Wi-Fi, waiting areas, and food and beverage outlets, and is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing public transport infrastructure.

Passengers can choose between two travel classes: Comfort and Premium. Comfort class offers standard seating, while Premium class provides wider seats, greater legroom, and complimentary snacks and drinks. Comfort class passengers can purchase food and beverages separately from onboard trolleys. The station is directly linked to the Dubai Metro Red Line via a dedicated 400-metre pedestrian footbridge, which connects Al Yalayis to the Jumeirah Golf Estates Metro Station. This transfer point allows commuters to switch between rail and metro services without crossing roads or using taxis, a journey that takes approximately five minutes on foot.

Additional connectivity options include the F38 feeder bus, which links the station to Dubai Production City and Dubai Sports City. For motorists, the station provides 265 parking spaces, including five designated spots for electric vehicles. Car rental offices are also available at the station for those wishing to rent a vehicle upon arrival in their destination emirate.

The new service connects Dubai to operational stations in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah. The integration of Etihad Rail with the Dubai Metro is a key component of the strategy to reduce car dependence across the UAE. By linking the rail network with the metro system, the infrastructure aims to create a cohesive public transport ecosystem. The station’s placement near Dubai South highlights the alignment of the rail network with major commercial and residential development zones in the emirate.

Adhraa Almansoori, Executive Director of Commercial at Etihad Rail Mobility, emphasized that the network is designed to evolve with the city. “We don’t put a station to serve only today’s guests, but we think about it strategically. How would the city evolve and how can we be part of the future infrastructure as well?” she noted. The opening of the Dubai station completes the passenger network for the emirates currently covered by the service, with the first train departing Al Yalayis at 6:14 am on the launch date.

The expansion of Etihad Rail’s passenger services is expected to influence commuting habits and local transport planning in Dubai. The availability of a direct rail link to Abu Dhabi and Fujairah provides an alternative to road travel, potentially reducing traffic congestion and offering a reliable mode of inter-city transport. The ticket pricing structure, with entry-level fares under AED 40, positions the rail service as a cost-effective option for both daily commuters and leisure travelers.

Future developments will likely focus on enhancing the integration between rail, metro, and bus networks to improve overall accessibility. The successful launch of the Dubai station serves as a precedent for potential future expansions of the Etihad Rail network to other parts of the UAE. The operational efficiency of the new station, including its on-time performance and passenger capacity, will be a key metric for assessing the viability of the inter-emirate rail service in the coming months.
