Meta confirms resolution of global outage affecting Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

The service disruption began shortly before 10:00 a.m. ET, with initial reports suggesting the trouble originated with WhatsApp before spreading to other platforms. Users across the globe experienced a range of system failures, including unexpected logouts, error messages such as “404 – Page Not Found” and “Sorry, something went wrong,” and an inability to send or receive messages. Instagram users reported that feeds would not refresh and that videos, or Reels, often froze on the first frame or failed to play entirely.

Outage-tracking data indicates the scale of the incident. The monitoring service Down Detector logged a sharp spike in user error reports, with Facebook bearing the brunt of the complaints. Reports for Facebook passed 130,000, while Instagram logged approximately 9,500 reports. Although these figures are self-reported and track user complaints rather than internal server data, the geographic spread of the reports—from the Philippines and Taiwan to Australia, Spain, and South Africa—suggests a central infrastructure issue rather than a localized glitch.

The outage had significant implications beyond consumer social networking. Meta’s status page for its business applications logged “High Disruptions” across several enterprise tools, including Facebook Ads Manager, the Messenger Platform, the Messenger API for Instagram, and the WhatsApp Business Platform. Advertisers were unable to create or edit ads during the peak of the disruption. Meta later stated that it had recovered from an earlier outage impacting Ads Creation and Editing, apologizing for the inconvenience caused to businesses.

Meta’s VP of Communications, Andy Stone, acknowledged the outage on the social platform X, confirming that engineers were actively working to resolve the issue. By 1:26 p.m. ET, Stone posted an update stating that Meta services were being restored. While most consumer-facing services returned to normal by midday, recovery was uneven, with some users still experiencing intermittent access or stale feeds even after the official all-clear.

As of the time of the latest updates, Meta has not provided a specific explanation for the root cause of the outage. It remains unclear whether the disruption was the result of a configuration error, an infrastructure failure, or another technical fault. The company has not released data on the precise number of users affected, noting that the reports available are based on user submissions.

The incident capped an eventful day for the technology giant, which had earlier pledged to provide free AI glasses to every blind US veteran. While the immediate service disruption has been resolved, the lack of a detailed post-mortem regarding the cause leaves questions about the resilience of Meta’s global infrastructure. For now, users in affected regions have reported that their feeds, messaging capabilities, and login functions have returned to normal operation.
