Trump cites candidates, gas prices in wake of GOP midterm losses

“I thought we would do better,” Trump told Fox News. “We had tremendous rallies, thousands of people outside let alone inside that couldn’t get in.” He also posted on his social media platform shortly after projections indicated the Democrats would take the House, writing: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

The President attributed the Republican losses to several factors, including the choice of candidates and economic conditions. In a phone interview with Politico, he stated, “But they didn’t agree, and they didn’t like the candidates in most cases, just one of those things.” Trump also cited high gas prices resulting from the war in Iran as a contributing factor to the defeat.

Trump’s influence was visible in several key races that ended in losses for his nominees. In the Texas Senate race, he endorsed Attorney General Ken Paxton over incumbent Senator John Cornyn in the primary; Paxton was projected to lose on Tuesday. Similarly, Trump endorsed Darline Graham for a full term in the South Carolina special election to fill the seat left vacant by her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham. Graham was also projected to lose her bid.

When asked if he believed specific candidates failed to perform adequately, Trump said, “I don’t want to blame anybody. I just want to say, you know, it was — it was a very interesting period of time. I watched with great interest, learned from it.” However, he directed significant criticism at Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who was projected to lose his bid for a fourth term to Democratic challenger Gina Hinojosa.

“If Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, hadn’t become a RINO in the last six months of his Political Life, he wouldn’t have lost,” Trump posted, using the term for “Republican in Name Only.” He added, “He went back to his original formula, and it wasn’t pretty.”

Regarding the legislative path forward, Trump indicated a willingness to work with the new Democratic majority but signaled a confrontational stance on specific legislation. In the Politico interview, he said he was willing to work with Democrats to “make sure things go well for our country.” When asked about a potential immigration deal, he replied, “I’d consider doing whatever I think is appropriate and good for the country.”

Despite this openness, Trump emphasized his executive powers. He posted a picture of his signature red hat with the word “VETO” displayed across it. Speaking to Fox News, he asserted that Democrats are not truly in control because they can send over bills that he will return. “They can send over, you know, 50 different great bills that they’re all excited about, and I send them back with a nice stamp veto,” he said. Ahead of the results, he had described himself as “Mr. Veto” if the Democrats regained control of Congress.
