Amedspor Secures Historic Promotion to Turkish Super Lig Amid Political Controversy

The promotion follows a consistent campaign characterized by disciplined performances and strong home support. However, the club’s journey to the top flight has been shadowed by controversy. Amedspor was established in 1972 but adopted its current name in 2014, changing from Diyarbakir Buyuksehir Belediyespor to Amedspor to embrace the Kurdish identity of Diyarbakir, known as Amed in Kurdish. This decision drew immediate opposition from the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), which imposed a fine on the club. In the years since, Amedspor players and supporters have frequently reported facing racism and physical hostility during away matches, leading to repeated financial penalties and, at one point, a seven-year ban on supporters attending away games that was lifted in 2023.

Political Fallout and Accusations of Discrimination

The sporting success has not insulated the club from political scrutiny. Tuncer Bakırhan, co-chair of the Democratic Peoples’ Party (DEM), has accused Turkish football authorities of racist and discriminatory treatment of Amedspor. Bakırhan criticized recent disciplinary penalties, questioning what he described as persistent hostility toward the club within the football system. He linked these issues to broader political conditions, arguing that “clean football” cannot be achieved without democracy.

Bakırhan’s criticism centers on the treatment of Amedspor and its fans, accusing the TFF of remaining silent when the club is subjected to threats and discriminatory behavior in stadiums. He also alleged that Kurdish footballers who have performed successfully at the European level have been denied opportunities with the Turkish national team due to their identity, though no specific players were named in his remarks. The TFF has not responded to these accusations.

Recent disciplinary actions have fueled this tension. The TFF imposed fines totaling more than 2.5 million Turkish lira on Amedspor, citing political slogans displayed during matches. In a separate incident, the federation fined the club 802,500 Turkish lira and suspended its president for 15 days following the publication of a 20-second social media video. The clip, which featured a woman having her hair braided set to the Kurdish slogan “Jin, jiyan, azadi” (Woman, life, freedom), was deemed by the TFF to constitute “ideological propaganda” that damaged the reputation of football. The video was part of a wider social media campaign showing solidarity with Syrian Kurds during military operations in northern Syria.

Preparation for the Super Lig

Despite the external pressures, the club is moving rapidly to prepare for the challenges of the top flight. Nahit Eren is set to be confirmed as president at a congress on June 1, having been backed as the sole candidate by the club’s high advisory board. This unified leadership front allows management to accelerate an ambitious overhaul of the club’s infrastructure and squad. Eren acknowledged the significant gap in quality between the First League and the Super Lig, stating that the club must prepare its infrastructure and team accordingly to remain competitive. “Our primary objective is to represent this identity and these colors of our people everywhere, including Europe,” Eren said.

Sports commentators emphasize the need for immediate modernization of the stadium and training facilities. Analysts suggest that Amedspor must appoint a coach capable of implementing an aggressive and resilient style of play, along with a sporting director to manage transfer planning effectively. The club aims to assemble a squad capable of surviving the intense competition of the Super Lig, where lower-ranked teams face the threat of relegation. While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated the club on its achievement, the path ahead remains fraught with both sporting and political hurdles.

The next major step for Amedspor is its debut season in the Super Lig, where it will test its ability to maintain its newly acquired status against the country’s most established footballing institutions.
