Copa Airlines becomes first in Latin America to launch Starlink internet, extends Panama stopover to 15 days

The airline has adopted a distinct monetization strategy for the new service, differing from previous deployments where access was often free. Complimentary Starlink WiFi will be available to ConnectMiles PreferMember Gold, Platinum, and Presidential tier members, as well as passengers traveling in Business Class. Additionally, customers holding Starlink Residential and Starlink Roam subscriptions will receive free onboard access. All other passengers will be required to purchase internet access through Starlink’s onboard portal. Diana Mizrachi-Kopel, Senior Director of Customer Experience at Copa Airlines, stated that introducing Starlink is “another step in our commitment to continuously improving the travel experience for our customers through innovation,” noting that the airline is now “the region’s first airline to offer Starlink’s high-speed internet onboard our aircraft.”

In parallel with the technological upgrade, Copa Airlines has extended its Panama Stopover program from seven days to up to 15 days at no additional airfare cost. This expansion aims to leverage Panama City’s position as a transit hub, allowing travelers to extend their stays without incurring extra ticket costs. Concurrently, the airline has maintained its no-hedge stance regarding fuel costs, a position being tested by current fuel market shocks affecting the aviation sector. The company has also strengthened its loyalty ecosystem by activating point transfers from Citi ThankYou Points to its ConnectMiles program, providing a new redemption channel for U.S. credit card holders.

The introduction of Starlink allows passengers to utilize services such as live sports streaming, movies, cloud-based work applications, and real-time web browsing. The phased rollout signifies a broader industry trend toward offering premium digital amenities as a differentiator in a competitive market. While the initial deployment began in early July 2026, the full integration across the fleet remains a multi-quarter project, with completion targeted for Q1 2027. The recent temporary closure of Tocumen International Airport due to seismic activity highlights the operational vulnerabilities of the hub, yet the airline continues to push forward with long-term strategic initiatives like connectivity upgrades and program expansions.
