Musk backs Trump’s call for Ukrainian leadership change amid diplomatic rift

The intervention by Musk follows a sharp diplomatic escalation between Washington and Kyiv triggered by a telephone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 9. During the call, the two leaders reached an agreement regarding the supply of diesel fuel from Russia. Zelensky reacted with strong condemnation, describing the lifting of sanctions on Russian fuel as an “absolutely terrible step.” He characterized the move as a “birthday present for Putin,” arguing that it would provide the aggressor with additional billions of dollars to prolong the war.

The friction between the US and Ukraine intensified further when Zelensky accused the Ukrainian negotiating team in the United States of being used as a “smoke screen” while Trump finalized arrangements with Putin. This accusation highlights a deepening rift over the direction of the peace process. Compounding the crisis, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that during the call, Putin rejected the possibility of peace negotiations, emphasizing that Russia would continue combat operations until it achieved “all its goals.”

In the immediate aftermath of the US-Russia fuel deal, multilateral talks involving representatives from the US, Ukraine, European countries, and NATO, which were being held in Miami to discuss de-escalation and the end of the war, concluded prematurely. On October 10, Ukrainian presidential advisor for communications Dmytro Lytvyn confirmed that the Ukrainian delegation had begun its journey home, signaling a breakdown in the current diplomatic track.

Musk’s public support for a leadership change in Kyiv carries significant weight given his company’s critical role in Ukraine’s defense infrastructure. The relationship between Musk and the Ukrainian military has been complex and evolving. In March 2025, Musk stated that he would never disconnect the Starlink network for Ukrainian troops, despite his disagreement with Ukrainian policy, after previously warning that the front line would collapse if the service were cut.

The dynamic shifted during the winter of 2026 when Musk responded to a request from then-Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov to help resolve the issue of Starlink terminals being used on Russian strike drones. Following this intervention, reports indicated that a large number of Russian Starlink terminals ceased to function in February. More recently, on July 28, during a meeting at the White House, Zelensky reportedly asked Trump to request that Musk grant Ukraine permission to use Starlink within Russian territory to strike ballistic missile launch sites.

However, as of August 7, Musk had reportedly refused this request. The geopolitical stakes regarding satellite connectivity were further highlighted in late September when Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that he had appealed to Musk to expand Starlink coverage for Ukraine. Stubb identified this as one of three critical needs for Ukraine during the current winter, emphasizing the strategic importance of the satellite network in countering Russian ballistic missile threats.

The convergence of economic sanctions policy, military technology access, and high-level political commentary places Musk in a unique position to influence the trajectory of the conflict. While his comments reflect alignment with the Trump administration’s hardline stance on Ukrainian leadership, they also occur against a backdrop where the practical utility of his technology remains central to the battlefield dynamics. The premature end of the Miami talks and the accusation of being a “smoke screen” suggest that the diplomatic framework for ending the war is currently stalled, with leadership disputes in Kyiv now becoming a central point of contention in Washington.
