Algeria marks 72nd anniversary of 1954 Revolution with tributes from leadership and international diplomats

President Tebboune described the date as a reminder for the nation to remain mindful of its sovereignty. In a separate statement issued on the same day, Khalida Boufedeche, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, emphasised that the commemoration serves as a tribute from post-independence generations to the sacrifices made by their ancestors to regain national independence.

The domestic observances were mirrored by international diplomatic activity. A conference titled “The Algerian Revolution of November 1, 1954 and Its Impact on International Relations” was held on Saturday at Le Méridien Dhaka in Bangladesh to mark the occasion. Algerian Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani addressed the gathering, describing the 1954 revolution not merely as a national independence movement but as a historic force that strengthened principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and human dignity.

Dr Saidani noted that the revolution exposed contradictions within the international community regarding universal human rights and the denial of political rights to colonised populations. He highlighted that the struggle, which culminated in Algerian independence in July 1962, inspired anti-colonial movements across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Ambassador also referenced Algeria’s subsequent role in supporting liberation movements, a contribution that earned the country the reputation of being the “Mecca of Revolutionaries.”

Speakers at the Dhaka conference further noted the revolution’s impact on global political structures, specifically its contribution to the collapse of the French Fourth Republic. The 1954 uprising is widely regarded as a landmark event in global decolonisation that reshaped international relations.

Algeria’s official commemoration of the 72nd anniversary is scheduled to continue on Sunday, with state authorities describing the period as a “true school of struggle” that redefined the contours of liberation thought globally. No new legislative votes or judicial proceedings related to the anniversary were announced in the available reports.
