UN Report Labels Attacks on Gaza Journalists as “Medyacyrime

According to the report, Israel has killed approximately 300 journalists and injured over 400 since October 2023. It states that about 70 of those killed were performing their professional duties at the time of their deaths. The report further claims that 710 relatives of journalists have been killed, citing the case of photojournalist Fatma Hassouna, who died along with five family members in an attack on her home in April 2025. The document alleges that 150 journalists’ homes have been destroyed and that over 100 journalists have been detained, with claims of torture and sexual violence.

The report details the destruction of media infrastructure, stating that 81 percent of Gaza’s communication infrastructure has been destroyed and 12 percent damaged. It claims that 150 media offices, including news agency centers and broadcasting towers, were demolished by October 2025. The report alleges that the Israeli military established a specific unit to label Palestinian journalists as Hamas members, thereby justifying their targeting. It also accuses international digital platforms and media outlets of suppressing Palestinian narratives and normalizing distortions, citing specific examples from Western media and social media companies.

The report calls on the UN General Assembly to establish an independent mechanism to protect evidence of crimes against journalists. It urges Israel to stop attacks on press workers, release arbitrarily detained individuals, and allow international media and human rights observers access to Gaza. Additionally, it recommends that states investigate attacks on Palestinian journalists and fulfill their obligations to prevent genocide. The report notes that Israel has been a leading actor in requesting content takedowns from digital platforms, including those managed by Google and X, to suppress coverage of the conflict.

The allegations in the report are based on the findings of the Special Rapporteur and have not been independently verified by all parties. The report distinguishes between the actions of the Israeli military and the policies of international media organizations, though it links both to the suppression of information regarding the conflict in Gaza. The term “medyacyrime” is presented as a descriptive evaluation of the scale and intent of the reported attacks on media personnel and infrastructure.
