Court grants Wladimir Klitschko temporary guardianship of Hayden Panettiere’s estate

The legal intervention addresses immediate concerns that Panettiere’s assets are at risk of being lost, damaged, or dissipated. Klitschko’s legal team argued that specific items, including jewelry, had been taken by an unnamed non-family member who attempted to sell them at a pawn shop. Additionally, the petition noted that federal law enforcement agents investigating Panettiere’s death have taken certain pieces of property, leaving no individual in a position to recover or manage these assets for the child’s benefit.

Klitschko, 50, has held primary custody of Kaya for most of her life, and the girl has resided with him in Ukraine. Both the father and daughter appeared remotely via videoconference for the brief hearing. Kaya was visible on camera sitting at a table, while the court focused on the procedural necessity of the guardianship. Santoro, satisfied with the explanation regarding the urgency of the situation, appointed Klitschko to serve in this capacity until a permanent estate administrator can be formally appointed.

The petition filed on Sept. 24 emphasized that the appointment was solely intended to preserve the estate’s value. It stated that there was a “high probability” that property belonging to Panettiere’s estate could be lost or misappropriated. Court documents indicated that before her death, Panettiere and Klitschko had hired security for her home after an unauthorized person gained access, raising fears that the same individual would continue to target her assets posthumously. Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, filed a separate document consenting to Klitschko’s appointment.

Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in the television series “Heroes” and “Nashville,” was found unresponsive in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, on Aug. 16. She was pronounced dead at the age of 36. A coroner’s report determined that her death was the result of an accidental overdose of several drugs, including fentanyl. At the time of her death, she had recently completed a period of rehabilitation and had plans to visit her daughter in Ukraine within days.

Clitschko and Panettiere began dating in 2009 and became engaged in 2013. The former boxer, an Olympic gold medalist, held multiple heavyweight titles between 2000 and 2015. The ruling by Judge Santoro holds authority within Los Angeles County, where the disputed property and the pawnshop in question are located. The temporary guardianship provides a legal framework for Klitschko to address tax filings due this month and to negotiate with both law enforcement agencies and private parties regarding the return of the assets.

This procedural step is distinct from any criminal proceedings related to the death investigation. It serves strictly as a civil protection measure to ensure that the inheritance belonging to a minor child is not compromised during the transition period before a long-term administrator takes over. The next significant step in the estate process will involve the appointment of that permanent administrator.
