Jay-Z to headline Super Bowl LXI half-time show at SoFi Stadium in 2027

For the past several seasons, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, has served as a primary partner in producing the league’s entertainment presentations. Since 2019, Roc Nation has advised on and helped produce the Super Bowl half-time show, a role that began with the performance by Shakira and Jennifer Lopez at Super Bowl LIV in 2020. During that period, Jay-Z famously told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that if the partnership was about him performing, “we can just end this conversation now.” However, Goodell stated on Monday that the league had wanted the rapper to perform for years, noting that his sole request when first agreeing to the Roc Nation partnership was for Jay-Z to take the stage “whenever the moment felt right to him.”

The selection of Jay-Z as the 2027 headliner coincides with a recent surge in his physical presence on the stage. Just prior to the announcement, the rapper closed his “Jay-Z 30” concert tour over the weekend at SoFi Stadium, the same venue that will host the Super Bowl. The tour, which celebrated three decades of his career, included dates in New York and London. In a statement accompanying the announcement, Jay-Z reflected on the journey: “From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey. Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”

Observers had questioned the likelihood of Jay-Z’s selection, primarily due to his lack of recent solo chart hits. His last solo album, 4:44, was released in 2017, while his most recent collaborative work was with his wife, Beyoncé, in 2018 as the Carters. Despite the gap in new recordings, Jay-Z’s enduring cultural impact and historical significance in hip-hop remain substantial. Born Shawn Carter, he is a 25-time Grammy winner with 89 nominations, the second-most in history behind Beyoncé. His catalog, which includes landmark albums such as Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, and The Black Album, has defined generations of music. His 1996 debut, Reasonable Doubt, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame last year, further cementing his legacy.

Beyond music, Jay-Z’s career extends into publishing, management, and sports through Roc Nation, founded in 2008. He became the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017 and joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. His selection follows in the footsteps of other major musical acts who have headlined the Super Bowl, including Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Michael Jackson, The Who, Madonna, Coldplay, and the Blues Brothers. Most recently, Bad Bunny headlined the 2024 show, bringing on a roster of special guests including Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin, and Cardi B, which resulted in sharp gains for his songs across streaming platforms and discovery tools in the hours following the performance.

The 2027 performance will be Jay-Z’s first solo appearance at the Super Bowl half-time show, although he has long been connected to the event through his production work. The announcement highlights the NFL’s strategy of blending current commercial appeal with historical heavyweight figures, leveraging Jay-Z’s status as a cultural icon rather than a current chart-topper. As the league looks toward Super Bowl LXI, the focus now shifts to how Jay-Z’s production team will stage a performance that honors his three-decade career while engaging a global audience tuned in for the championship game.

The next major milestone for the rapper will be the commencement of production for the 2027 show, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of the most anticipated half-time performances in recent history.
