Gold Stabilizes Near $4,200 as Technical Reversal Clashes with Hawkish Fed Outlook

Technical Structure: Reversal vs. Trend

Market analysts note a divergence between short-term technical signals and longer-term macro trends. On the daily timeframe, an inverse head and shoulders pattern has formed, with price action riding along an ascending trendline anchored from the recent base. The current consolidation is carving out a potential right shoulder, accompanied by higher lows that suggest buyers are regaining control. This structure implies that if price can break through the local neckline, it could invalidate the larger bearish “head and shoulders” top pattern that has been threatening the market from the macro perspective.

Despite this short-term bullish signal, the underlying momentum still favors the US dollar. Gold prices remain below key moving averages, including the daily trend averages at $4,276 and $4,303, as well as the weekly fast average at $4,256. A thick resistance zone sits between $4,255 and $4,300, comprising these trend lines and last week’s high of $4,280. Conversely, support levels are established at $4,156–$4,162, with further downside protection at $4,104 and the recent low of $4,066. A weekly close above $4,300 would be required to turn the broader picture bullish, while a close below $4,066 would reopen the path toward $3,943.

Macroeconomic Headwinds and Fed Policy

The primary constraint on gold’s upside remains the hawkish stance of the Federal Reserve under Chair Warsh. Markets are pricing in a high probability of another interest rate hike before the end of the year. Higher borrowing costs and a stronger dollar typically exert downward pressure on non-yielding assets like gold. This macro environment explains why recent rallies have repeatedly failed to sustain momentum.

However, some analysts point to quiet tailwinds in the bond market that could support precious metals. Short-term yields, specifically on the two-year Treasury, have been pulling back within a descending channel rather than breaking out to new highs. This retreat in short-end yields reduces immediate pressure on gold prices, potentially allowing the technical base to solidify despite the broader hawkish policy environment.

Outlook: CPI as the Deciding Factor

The direction for the coming week is expected to be determined by the release of US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on Wednesday at 13:30 BST. This inflation report is widely considered the most significant economic event of the week. A “hot” headline number, with forecasts pointing to a 0.6% month-over-month increase, would likely strengthen bets on further Fed rate hikes, potentially pushing gold back down to the $4,104–$4,066 range.

Conversely, a softer CPI print, particularly in the core figures, could break through the $4,207 level and drive prices into the $4,255–$4,300 resistance zone. Additional data points, including Thursday’s retail sales and Producer Price Index (PPI) reports, as well as a speech by Fed Chair Warsh on Friday, may extend the price movement initiated by the CPI release. Trading volumes are expected to be thin on Monday due to the US bank holiday, leading to choppy price action until the major data releases.

Analysts generally maintain a neutral bias for the near term, suggesting a trading range between $4,066 and $4,300. The market is currently in a state of pause, with technical indicators suggesting a potential bottom is forming, but macroeconomic policy keeping a lid on sustained rallies. The resolution of this conflict between technical recovery and monetary tightening will likely hinge on the inflation data released later this week.
